Irreversible electroporation (IRE) is a novel, non-thermal ablation modality, which was used to treat tumors. It uses high-voltage, low-energy DC current pulses to induce cell death. The application of an electric field across a cell leads to the formation of nanopores, a process called poration. IRE has shown promise to overcome some limitations of thermal ablative technologies. The advantages of IRE mainly include tissue selectivity, sharp ablation zone margins, absence of thermally induced necrosis, short treatment time, real-time monitoring, and immunological response.
